Scholarships & Exchanges 2008
In partnership with benefactors and businesses across Tasmania, Jane Franklin Hall provides thousands of dollars annually to its residents in the form of scholarships. Jane Franklin Hall and its partners are committed to providing the best possible study opportunities. Scholarships are an investment in tomorrow’s leaders and identify a belief in and a commitment to the long-term betterment of our society.
Scholarships are awarded on specific criteria for each scholarship. For some scholarships, the amount of money awarded varies according to monetary interest rates and the generosity of particular donors. Most scholarships are paid as a remission of fees, and residents may only be in receipt of one scholarship at any time.

THE DR ANDREW HERON PRIZE
From The Biology of Pelagic Tunicates
Ed. Dr Q Bone, Oxford University Press, 1998
This book is dedicated to the memory of Dr Andrew Heron, an unusually gentle and modest man, who was noted for his helpfulness to others, and for his enthusiasm for pelagic tunicates. He was the first to show, in a remarkable PhD thesis (later to appear as a number of seminal papers), what underlay the spectacular capacity of salps for bloom formation. He worked in the CSIRO Fisheries laboratory, first at Cronulla near Sydney, and then at the new Hobart laboratory. He was fortunate in possessing the most unusual combination of superior mathematical skills and a deep interest in natural history, and after a trip to Heron Island as a Sydney undergraduate, became a marine biologist whose best known and highly original work was on the population biology of the small salp Thalia.
This work, which resulted from field observations on a bloom of Thalia, soon became - and has remained - a classic of marine ecology, and as a glance at the bibliography of this book will show, he was interested in and contributed to functional anatomy as well.
He died on the 27th of November 1989, aged only 49, leaving his wife and colleague Shirley Jeffrey. Few scientists have made such an authoritative and original contribution to tunicate biology he will be much missed by all who knew him.
The Jane Franklin Hall/Faculty of Science and Engineering Scholarship
