Prospective Residents - Student Life

Student Life

Life at Jane flows with the academic year. The Commencement Dinner and Orientation Week get the year under way. Everyone quickly settles into the routines of study. If you’re an undergraduate, the Academic Development Programme and the rounds of sport mean the end of the semester comes in no time. During swot-vac, the College enjoys “Quiet Time” to help everyone focus on their assignments and exams. Second semester is busy in every way. The Ball, the Play, the Art Show, Jane Weekend and the Student Club elections.

Throughout the year, the College bus service takes residents on the short trip to the main campus. Weekly formal dinners during the academic terms bring us together as a community. There’s a nice balance between study and fun, sport and culture, something to do and time to reflect.

For postgraduates, life in one of the quieter areas of the College is more measured by individual tastes. The larger rooms (some with ensuite) allow for more flexible study and lifestyle choices. The Postgraduate Lounge is a quiet place to enjoy a decent coffee, play chess or watch television.

For some, the year concludes with the Valedictory Dinner. Others prefer to benefit from the cheaper rate of a 52 week contract, to continue their studies, work in Hobart, or enjoy the great hiking, sailing and markets that Hobart offers during the Summer.

At Jane we are especially proud of our academic record. An extensive Academic Development Programme, provided by trained and experienced tutors, is available for group and individual assistance in most subject areas. Participation in the programme is encouraged at all levels and the academic performance of residents is closely monitored throughout the year. Each resident is allocated a Fellow of the College. Representing a range of disciplines and interests, Fellows offer informal support and supplementary social and extra-curricular activities throughout the year. In addition, a Visiting Fellows programme brings distinguished scholars, writers and artists from around the world to live among the residents for several months at a time.
